Grind that Axe

Mission Statement

JUST AS Rock Candy concerns itself with unearthing the very best of rock music past, especially from the late '70s and '80s, so sister label Grind That Axe is all about discovering the most exciting new heavyweights of today, and of course tomorrow...

The A&R policy is simple; if an up 'n' comin' act excites the GTA team (effectively, Derek & myself) to the point where we've smashed the glass and broken out the emergency air guitars and neck braces, then chances are that act will be invited to make an album - or at least stop by for a cup of Earl Grey and a rivet-laden scone.

Please note that all prices include postage and packing to anywhere in the world...and beyond!

Murder One

Murder One2.jpgFirst to drink from the Teapot Of Doom were Murder One, described by Kerrang! as “One of the most ferocious bands ever to walk the earth!”, and boy, were they on the money! This six-piece UK outfit - featuring members and ex-members of Medulla Nocte, Pulkas and Raging Speedhorn - are an unrelenting experience from first note to last; a bit like having your shins consistently kicked by a delinquent child in steel-capped boots.

The band’s debut album, ‘Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid’ (GTA001), has been on release for a few weeks now, and the reviews have been uniformly excellent: 8/10 in Rock Sound, 8/10 in Metal Hammer and the FULL 5Ks in Kerrang!, where the record was straight away hailed as a testicles-in-a-tourniquet classic. Check out ‘Start Of The War’ for a statement of intent that should come complete with its own pot of woad, or the preposterously potty-mouthed ‘Born With Tourettes’, a track that mentions the word ‘f**k’ as often as Gordon Ramsey on a sponsored swear - yes, it’s that good! Somewhere a specially empowered nun is praying for their souls…

Head-On

Head On Sleeve compressed2.jpgNext into the fray we have Head-On, four musicians (from Reading in the UK) who are very much of the opinion that size most definitely DOES count! No doubt the reason why their debut album (GTA002) is called ‘X.X.L’…

Not only do these guys look as though they could kick most of a Spanish beach into your face, but they deliver a brand of music that puts them squarely in the (bad) company of bands such as Corrosion Of Conformity, Black Label Society and Down. Yep, we’re talkin’ mighty riffing and a groove that refuses (simply refuses) to let go. And then there’s frontman Mark Logan who - when he’s not threatening to bring down the hammer (’Here Comes The Hammer’) - is, well, actually DOING IT, whipping out the devil’s own croquet mallet at any & every opportunity!

‘X.X.L’ has just been added to the GTA schedule for September 25th.
